“Yes Jesus loves me, yes Jesus loves me, yes Jesus loves me for the bible tells me so.” Those lyrics are some of the first lyrics we hear and learn as children. We sing the song, learn the tune and as we grow up and become worldly wise – we forget them.
The truth is that many Christians do not truly believe that God loves them. They say the words, sing the songs and read the scriptures but in their heart of hearts doubt, fear and guilt rob them of the truth God gave them when they first believed.
Paul the apostle said that he was convinced [persuaded, committed to believing] that nothing would or could separate us from God’s love.
Romans 8:38-39 New Living Translation
38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
You see Paul had grabbed hold to the truth of who Jesus Christ really was. Jesus Christ was God’s love made flesh. Sin had separated mankind from God and through the death of Christ Jesus God reconciled [healed the breech] between us and him; further, he chose us, called us, made us righteous and gave unto us his blessed glory – all as a result of Christ’s death. Hallelujah to God!
Isaiah said that it pleased God to crush his Son, for us. Think about that. It pleased Him to crush his very own Son for a world of sinners. Men and women who not only did not know who he was but didn’t care and when they were told the truth they mocked and rejected him – and yet Christ died, for us.
Imagine this, a mother removes her suckling child from her breast, she hands him over to a vile and wretched beast and watches him die a cruel and agonizing death for the sake of someone who hates her and she does so with pleasure.
The image is brutal isn’t it? But it is in effect just what God did for our sake. He sent his pure and holy Son to a world filled with sin to endure suffering and shame to die for a people who desired his death.
God’s love for us is boundless and completely awe-inspiring.
The Creator of the universe, the God that calls the stars to come out one by one and by name; the God who causes the tide to come in and go out; the God who has the sun to rise in the morning and the moon to rise at night; the God who causes the earth to spin on its axis, the planets of the universe to align and spin and exist – that very same God chose us to love.
Ephesians 1:4-5 New Living Translation
4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. 5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.
God loved you, that’s right you, before he created the world. Loving you pleases God and there’s nothing you can do to stop Him! Oh praise the name of the Living God!
Romans 8:29-30 New Living Translation
29 For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.
God loved you before time began and then he chose you – from out of all the world’s population – to call unto himself, to fill with his Holy Spirit and to give you his glory and he did so with ‘great pleasure’.
Grasping a hold to God’s love for us is the key to all other principles and promises in the scriptures. (Matthew 22:36-40) We must receive His love, love him in return, maintain our love and faith in Him and stand on the promises of God until the end. Receiving and maintaining our belief in God’s love for us is vital to our victory and our faith. Satan knows this which is why he works so hard to separate us from God.
Understand, we can separate ourselves from fellowship with God but we can never separate ourselves from Him or His love.
Matthew 28:20 (b) ESV
“…And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
God will never withdraw his love from us. No matter what!
Beloved of God, do you know that Jesus loves you? Do you really believe it? I encourage you to resist answering quickly instead examine your heart and be sure. If you don’t believe his love don’t beat yourself up. You’re not alone. The enemy of our faith has worked the same doubt into the hearts of many believers, including myself. I used to believe God saved me because of my mother’s prayer! Not because He really loved me.
Why on earth (or heaven) would God love me? That was my thought pattern in the past BUT God! Oh how great thou art! God came to me over and over and over again and with patience and tender love He wooed me, romanced me and drowned me, surrounded me and completely overwhelmed me with his love to the point that I had no choice but to except it! Hallelujah to the Lamb of God!
My sister, my brother, I encourage you to read the love letter God has written for his people. Explore its treasures, its promises and the many instances God expresses his love for us and you will once again be able to sing the childhood song, “Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes! Jesus loves me for the bible tells me so!”
Hymn by William Batchelder Bradbury
Jesus loves me—this I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong—
They are weak, but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me!
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me—He who died
Heaven’s gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.
